Update on Aged Care Reforms – What You Need to Know

Your Care. Your Rights. Our Commitment.

The Australian Government has announced a short deferral of the new Aged Care Act 2024 and Support at Home program, which will now begin on 1 November 2025.

This change comes after listening to feedback from older Australians, families, carers, and the aged care sector. The extra time will ensure the reforms are introduced smoothly—with clarity, care, and your best interests at heart.

What does this mean for you?

If you’re currently receiving services through a Home Care Package or Short-Term Restorative Care, nothing changes. Your care will continue as usual until the new Support at Home program begins.

The deferral provides:

  • More time to understand how the system is changing

  • Clarity around your rights and how you stay in control

  • Confidence in knowing what providers are expected to deliver

  • The opportunity to make informed decisions that suit your needs

At The Butler, we welcome this thoughtful pause. It allows us to keep doing what we do best—offering tailored, respectful care in your own home—while helping you prepare for what’s ahead.

A rights-based approach to aged care

The new legislation places you at the centre of your care, with a stronger focus on transparency, accountability and individual choice. We’re here to guide you through these changes and ensure you feel supported every step of the way.

If you'd like to read more, you can view a letter from the Minister for Aged Care and Seniors, Sam Rae MP, outlining what this update means for you and the wider sector.

If you have any questions, we’re only a phone call or visit away.

Warm regards,

The Butler Team
